There is a story that we do not teach enough: that of the time when praying proudly in front of the Kotel was an act of armed resistance. In the 1930s, under the British Mandate, the colonial power capitulated to Arab riots by imposing humiliating restrictions on Jews in front of the Western Wall. It was forbidden to sound the Shofar there, under penalty of immediate arrest. For the official Jewish leadership of the time, it was necessary to bow down and obey. For Betar, it was intolerable. In 1937, Jabotinsky validated the creation of Plugot HaKotel. These young activists set up shop in the heart of the Old City of Jerusalem with a clear objective: to restore the “muscle Jew”. They ensure the safety of the faithful against stone throwing and, each year, in defiance of the danger, they break the British ban by sounding the Shofar at the exact minute Yom Kippur ends. These teenagers knew they were going to be arrested, beaten and imprisoned in the Acre fortress. They did it anyway, year after year. Why is our media called Altalena? Behind this name hides one of the darkest, most hidden, but also most foundational episodes in the modern history of Israel. The Altalena — named in homage to the pen name of Ze'ev Jabotinsky — was a ship chartered by the Irgun. On June 22, 1948, in the middle of the War of Independence, it transported 941 fighters and a colossal military arsenal (5,000 rifles, millions of munitions, armored vehicles) intended to reinforce the front lines and break the siege of Jerusalem. But for Ben-Gurion's government, the presence of an armed revisionist force was intolerable. Rather than using these weapons against the Arab armies, the command ordered the ship to be bombed facing the beaches of Tel Aviv. Under fire from the artillery cannon, the boat burst into flames. This is where our heritage was written. While his men were being targeted and blood was being shed, Menachem Begin refused to give the order to retaliate. Atop the burning ship, he shouted, “No civil war, at any cost!” ". Begin sacrificed his weapons, his soldiers and his military triumph to preserve the unity of the Jewish people at a time when their survival was at stake. Recalling the history of Altalena is not just commemorating a tragedy. It is to affirm our doctrine: the visceral refusal of internal discord, the demand for historical truth and the absolute imperative of military power to defend every parcel of our land. We bear this name so that the sacrifice of the 16 Irgun martyrs will never be erased by official history. May their memory be a blessing. We constantly hear this biased historical refrain: “Before 1948 and the arrival of Zionism, Jews lived in peace and perfect security in the Arab world. » The facts formally deny this rewriting of history. On June 1, 1941, in Baghdad, Farhoud broke out. Taking advantage of the political vacuum, an Iraqi crowd indoctrinated by the Nazi propaganda of Prime Minister Rashid Ali al-Gillani and the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem (Amin al-Husseini) rushed on the local Jewish community, although it had been established there since the exile from Babylon, i.e. 2,600 years of history. The results of these two days of waves of riots, committed on the very day of the Shavuot holiday, are appalling: hundreds of deaths, thousands of injured, rapes, infants thrown into the Tigris, and more than 900 Jewish homes looted before the eyes of complicit police. This massacre occurred seven years before the creation of the State of Israel. It proves indisputably that anti-Jewish hatred in the region is not a product of the current Arab-Israeli conflict, but a pre-existing reality. It was the Farhoud that pushed the Jewish youth of Iraq to arm themselves clandestinely, before fleeing en masse to the only land capable of guaranteeing their security: Israel. History teaches us that only national sovereignty and defensive strength protect our people.

When pro-Palestinian activists and international bodies describe the reunification of Jerusalem in 1967 as an “occupation,” they deliberately obscure the historic crimes committed by Jordan nineteen years earlier. On May 27, 1948, in the midst of the War of Independence, Abdullah el-Tell's Arab Legion committed one of the greatest acts of cultural vandalism of the 20th century: the methodical destruction with explosives of the great Hurva synagogue. The 24-meter Byzantine dome, which embodied a continuous Jewish presence for centuries, is collapsing. It was only the prelude to a total purge. The next day, after the surrender of the Jewish quarter, Jordan expelled all the inhabitants and erased history: 58 synagogues razed, the Mount of Olives cemetery desecrated, and the graves transformed into barracks slabs for Jordanian soldiers. For 19 years, no Jew will be allowed to pray at the Kotel, in flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreements. In 1967, the IDF ended 19 years of illegal occupation and desecration. In 2010, Israel rebuilt the Hurva identically.

Fifty days after Passover, the Jewish people celebrate Shavuot, the festival of the giving of the Torah. This day recalls the moment when, at Mount Sinai, the children of Israel received the Ten Words and became bearers of a covenant, a law and a responsibility that still run through our entire history. Shavuot is also a holiday linked to the land of Israel and the harvest. In ancient times, the first fruits of fruit and two loaves of wheat were brought to the Temple, as a sign of gratitude to G-d for the abundance of the earth. It is also during this period that we read the Book of Ruth, a strong text on fidelity, transmission and attachment to the Jewish people. Even today, Shavuot is marked by the study of the Torah, sometimes all night, by certain customs such as floral decorations in synagogues or the consumption of dairy dishes. But ultimately, the heart of the holiday remains the same: remembering that the Torah is not just an ancient heritage, but a living force that continues to guide the Jewish people. Hag Shavuot Sameach!

Today, we commemorate the anniversary of the death of Eli Cohen, hanged in Damascus on May 18, 1965. Infiltrated at the top of the Syrian state under the identity of Kamel Amin Thaabet, he achieved the impossible: becoming the close friend of ministers and generals, to the point of being considered for the post of Deputy Minister of Defense. His stroke of genius was to have eucalyptus trees planted to “offer shade” to the Syrian soldiers in their bunkers in the Golan. In June 1967, during the Six Day War, these trees became IDF beacons. Thanks to him, the fortifications deemed impregnable fell in a few hours, freeing northern Israel from the threat of bombing. Unmasked and condemned to hang, Eli Cohen refused to be blindfolded in the face of death. He looked his executioners in the face, with the dignity and pride of a hero of Israel. To this day, Syria still refuses to return his remains. May his memory be a blessing.

On April 19, 1943, the Warsaw ghetto rose up. Faced with extermination, Jews refused to die without fighting. Among them, members of Betar and Żydowski Związek Wojskowy took up arms. They are trained in the spirit of discipline, honor and courage, they embody the vision of the Jewish people who refuse to remain passive. Under the command of Paweł Frenkel, they confronted the German forces with paltry resources but held out for several weeks. They raise a Jewish flag alongside the Polish flag on Muranowski Square, an act of Jewish pride. After a month of fierce fighting, the ghetto fell and the fighters were killed, but they left behind the image of the Jew who fought and raised his head. This is Hadar. May their memory be a blessing. Tel Hai 🕎

On March 22, 1945, Eliyahu Hakim and Eliyahu Bet-Zuri were put to death in Cairo by the British, following a political trial. They climb the scaffold singing Hatikvah, affirming to the end the eternal sovereignty of the Jewish people over their land. Soldiers of Lehi, fighters for the freedom of Israel, they had struck at the heart of the colonial apparatus by executing Lord Moyne, representative of British domination and the policy of closing the doors of the Land of Israel to the Jews of Europe, which led to the death of thousands of Jews who had come to seek refuge in Palestine. They embody Hadar: Jewish pride, the refusal of exile, the desire for independence; one of the pillars of Betar. May their memory be a blessing. Tel Hai 🕎
